POLYPHONY

'Polyphony' follows Easter day in Santu Lussurgiu, Sardinia and Chios, Greece. The film weaves between polyphonic singing traditions and a 'mock war' in which 50,000 rockets are launched between two churches. As with much folk custom, both are likely to have predated the arrival of Christianity within the communities; the film seeks to reflect on how such folk rituals and communal traditions continue to exist within institutional frameworks.

The work was conceived through conversations with the Italian ethno-musicologist Ignazio Macchiarella and Greek filmmaker Vera Chotzoglou.
